What is an Eco Home and why more and more people are choosing this way of life

An eco home is not simply a building constructed from natural materials. It is a philosophy of life — a conscious choice of an environment that preserves health, saves energy and lives in harmony with nature. In a world where air quality, heating costs and environmental impact are becoming increasingly important, the eco home offers concrete and measurable answers to these challenges.

What makes a home eco

An eco home is characterised by three core principles: the use of natural and biodegradable materials, minimal environmental impact during construction, and long-term energy efficiency during operation.

Unlike conventional construction, which relies primarily on synthetic and industrial materials, an eco home is built from materials that are extracted or produced with a minimal carbon footprint and do not release harmful substances into the living space.

Materials for an eco home

Wood is the most widespread natural building material. An excellent thermal insulator, it regulates indoor humidity and creates a warm and cosy atmosphere. Well-treated wood is exceptionally durable and can serve for centuries.

Straw is one of the most underrated eco materials. Pressed straw bales have exceptional thermal insulation properties — their thermal conductivity coefficient is significantly lower than that of brick or concrete. Combined with clay plaster, straw also achieves high fire resistance.

Clay regulates humidity naturally, absorbs harmful substances from the air and creates a healthy microclimate. Clay walls "breathe" — they allow water vapour to pass outwards and prevent condensation on interior surfaces.

Stone is an exceptionally durable and aesthetically attractive material. Suitable for load-bearing structures and decorative elements. Natural stone accumulates heat and releases it slowly, helping to maintain a stable temperature in the rooms.

Reed and hemp are natural insulation materials with excellent technical characteristics. They regulate moisture, are resistant to mould and ensure a healthy microclimate. Fully biodegradable and ecologically clean.

The microclimate in an eco home

One of the most valuable qualities of an eco home is its unique microclimate. Natural materials regulate humidity biologically — they absorb excess moisture when humidity is high and release it back in dry conditions. The result is stable indoor humidity between 40 and 60 percent — the optimal range for human health.

The walls of an eco home "breathe" — they allow air and water vapour to pass through without permitting cold air to penetrate from outside. This eliminates the problems of condensation, mould and dampness that are characteristic of conventional buildings with vapour-impermeable materials.

Furthermore, natural materials do not release volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde or other toxic substances — unlike many synthetic building and finishing materials.

Energy efficiency

Eco homes are significantly more energy-efficient than conventional buildings. Natural insulation materials — straw, hemp and wood fibre — have a considerably higher thermal insulation value than standard concrete or brick. This means lower heating costs in winter and better natural cooling in summer — without air conditioning.

Research shows that a correctly built eco home can reduce heating costs by 50–80 percent compared to a conventional building of the same floor area.

Durability and sustainability

Century-old and even older buildings exist, constructed from straw, clay and wood, in which these materials have remained in excellent condition. Natural materials age more gracefully than synthetic ones — over time they do not break down or release toxins, but simply return to nature at the end of their life cycle.

The eco home as an investment

Building an eco home requires more careful planning and material selection. But in the long term this investment pays back many times over — through lower heating costs, better health for the occupants, higher property value and a smaller carbon footprint.
