How to choose insulation for our home — special considerations for private houses

Insulating a private house is a more complex task than insulating an apartment. While in apartments the main issue is soundproofing between neighbours, in your own house you need to think about the entire building — from the foundation to the roof. A mistake in material choice at this stage is expensive to fix because it affects the whole structure.

Why home insulation is different

A private house is directly exposed to weather conditions from all sides — from above through the roof, from below through the foundation, and from the sides through the facade walls. Unlike an apartment, which is protected by neighbouring homes, a house must withstand cold, moisture, wind and sun year-round on its own.

That's why home insulation requires a comprehensive approach covering several structural zones at once — and for each zone it's important to choose the right material with the appropriate density.

Roof insulation

The roof is the zone with the greatest heat loss in a private house — up to 30 percent of heat can escape through it. Roof insulation must combine high thermal insulation value with good vapour permeability to avoid moisture build-up in the structure.

Hemp insulation is particularly suitable for roof structures — available in mats and rolls, with a density of 16 to 32 kilograms per cubic metre. For roof structures where the insulation doesn't bear any load, a lower density (16–20 kg/m³) is entirely sufficient and more cost-effective.

Facade insulation

The outer walls of a house are constantly exposed to temperature changes, rain and sun. With facade insulation, it's important that the insulating layer remains stable within the structure over time, without shrinking or settling.

For walls, we recommend hemp insulation with a higher density — around 32 kilograms per cubic metre. Higher density ensures the material's stability within the structure and prevents it from settling over the years, which is critical for durable and reliable facade insulation.

Foundation and basement insulation

The foundation and basement are in constant contact with soil and groundwater, so insulation here must be moisture-resistant over the long term.

Internal partition insulation and soundproofing

For internal partitions, bedrooms and shared spaces, sound insulation is often needed more than thermal insulation. Here it's important to choose the right material depending on the location:

Cotton Antisound is a textile sound insulation intended exclusively for indoor use — walls, ceilings and partitions in apartments, offices and studios. Not suitable for outdoor installation.

Polyest Antizvuk is an acoustic insulation made from polyester fibres, moisture-resistant, which can be used both indoors and outdoors thanks to its resistance to weather conditions.

Sheep wool insulation is another option with a density of 16 kilograms per cubic metre — a natural material preferred by people seeking entirely natural solutions for their home.

How to choose the right thickness and density

The choice of thickness depends on the structure and the desired thermal insulation value — a thicker layer provides better insulation but requires more space in the structure. The choice of density depends on whether the material will bear a load (walls, load-bearing structures — higher density) or simply fill space without pressure (roof, floor — lower density is sufficient).
